About DAB.bio
DAB.bio is a leading expert in the development and scaling up of continuous, in-situ extractive fermentation technology (ISPR). Our unique and patented FASTTM biomanufacturing platform (Fermentation Accelerated by Separation Technology) enables continuous recovery of a second (organic) phase during fermentation. FASTTM is both a fermentation reactor technology for large scale manufacturing as well as a revolutionary new way of setting up a fermentation process (both upstream and downstream). Continuously removing product and/or inhibitors from the fermentation process introduces an extra degree of freedom that enables increased runtime, better product yield and higher productivity. This offers significant cost reductions and creates many new product development opportunities.
To enable the transition from fossil to bio-based chemicals there is a strong need for breakthrough solutions. Low production rates, resulting in high product cost are currently a barrier for cost effective biomanufacturing. FASTTM addresses this issue head-on.
DAB.bio has a highly skilled workforce and is supported by motivated and capable investors. In the fermentation R&D team, we have an opportunity for a
(Sr.) Scientist Fermentation Technology
Key responsibilities
The purpose of the role is to drive development and commercialisation of industrial fermentation processes that utilize FASTTM in-situ product recovery technology. Development work at lab scale is routinely done in 3L bioreactors (location Delft, NL) while demonstration fermentations are done in DAB.bio’s 500L FASTTM reactor at the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (location Gent, B).
Your responsibilities include:
· Development of fermentation processes that make use of FASTTM ISPR technology. This involves both new processes as well as implementation in existing fermentation processes.
· Scale-up / scale-down fermentation processes from lab to pilot to full scale manufacturing.
· Translate business needs into R&D plans; identify opportunities for process improvement.
· Set up and support the experimental work, ensure correct execution, analysis and reporting.
· Represent DAB.bio in client and partner development projects.
· Perform desk studies, feasibilities and maintenance of knowledge base.
· Lead and participate in multidisciplinary project teams.
· Train / coach junior team members and interns.
· Maintain external industrial and academic network.
· Proactively support lab safety and operational excellence in the labs.
Key competencies
· Taking initiative and ownership
· Good planning skills, proactively flag issues
· Clear technical communication to varied audiences
· Self-management, initiative and resourcefulness
· Drive for results
· Customer oriented
The candidate
You are motivated to make impact in the global race to replace the fossil value chain by a sustainable bio-based one. You like working in a start-up, with a fast pace and close teamwork in a start-up environment. You are a self-starter and can work independently but thrive in a team setting.
Experience
· M.Sc. or PhD degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology or related field.
· At least 5 years’ experience in fermentation process development / bioprocess design in an industrial context.
· You are generally knowledgeable about bioprocess principles like batch/fed-batch/continuous, process yields and rates, scale-up and down and process modelling.
· Experience with leading (small) R&D project teams is considered a plus.
· Preferably, experience with both bacterial and yeast platform strains.
