About us

At Damen, much effort is put into designing sustainable ships. One aspect of sustainability is the circular economy and our Research department is working on different projects to reduce raw material usage and encourage the reduction of waste by using, among other things, alternative materials. One research project focuses on Circular Crew Cabin where we are looking at defining, measuring and improving circularity of a typical cabin onboard workboats and large offshore vessels. This graduation will be directly contributing to this project.

The role

The main role is to conduct research and investigations on the use of circular materials (bio-based, recycled, refurbished) that could be used for the considered vessels cabin. The graduate should be able to organize his or her work around gathering relevant information about the types of materials and how they could be used on board our vessels. This means contacting new suppliers and evaluating their solutions compared to existing ones regarding different parameters (circularity index, certification, costs).

Key accountabilities

This assignment aims at creating a list of potential materials and suppliers that could be used in the future to improve the circularity of our vessels cabins. Once a list of materials/suppliers is available, further research should be done on the consequences of replacing existing materials/components by the more circular ones. Think of safety, ship specific details, comfort, certifications and more.

This research should also consider the business case of circularity and how different techniques of the circular economy can be used.

You are responsible for planning, executing and reporting of this research and deliver a thorough overview of the new materials/suppliers. You are expected to present your final results to the department and other interested colleagues.
