The Biocluster of the Imaging Physics Department in TU Delft is a unique multidisciplinary research cluster with expertise in structural and functional electron microscopy, optical microscopy and ultrasound imaging for biological and biomedical research. The affiliated researchers are all early-career independent PIs that are recognized world experts in their field and that are working on the creation and implementation of imaging-based solutions to biomedical, biological, neuroscientific and clinical questions.
We manage a small-scale biological facility encompassing a zebrafish aquarium, some ML1 biolabs, an ML2 tissue culture lab, and a small mouse stable. The facility is well embedded and used by various labs. It supports a thriving collection of imaging-related projects, and is supported by a number of biotechnicians. This is a highly collaborative environment, both within the department and in making experiments possible for researchers interested in biosamples in the faculties of Applied Sciences (AS), Mechanical, Maritime and Material engineering (3ME) and Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). Our facilities are unique in Delft, and our expertise unique in the Netherlands and Europe.
For additional support of our biological research we are looking for a hardworking & flexible biolaboratory supervisor with a biotechnical background. The successful applicant will spend a minimum of ~0.4 FTE on lab-managerial tasks, which will grow over time with the growth of the facility, and the remaining FTE on more specialized support tasks which will be defined in collaboration with present technicians.
Lab managerial tasks include arranging maintenance for facility equipment, arranging MTAs, lab organization, GMO registration, inventory and ordering, animal stocktaking and registration, safety (safety commission membership, safety round supervision, project safety report creation, chemical, biological and physical safety information registration), trainings of new staff and students, and taking point in communication with building management regarding current and future lab facilities (an expanded biofacility has been designed and planned in the new applied sciences building, to be occupied at a future date TBD).
Given the nature and size of the facility, occasional caretaker duties (food preparation, feeding, and maintaining aquarium and stable systems; training will be provided if needed), including occasional animal care on weekends and holidays (max 3 hrs/month during irregular hours) will be required in collaboration with scientific and support staff.
Other specialized support tasks will be defined based on the interest of the applicant and in consultation with existing staff. Training will be provided based on interest and proficiency; tasks can include a selection of
- Working with and maintaining stable cell lines and acute cell preparations (HEK, HeLa, MDCK, Neural Progenitor Cells, Neurons, mixed cultures)
- Advise, optimization and performance of tissue culturing and engineering (acute cultures, organotypic slice, organoids)
- Advise, optimization and performance of transfection and infection procedures (lipofectamine, CalPhos, lenti, AAV)
- Advise, performance and optimization of small animal procedures and husbandry
- CCD project proposals
- Molecular Biology (Gibson, restriction enzymes, golden gate, histology, gels)
- Protein engineering
- Optical and Ultrasound imaging
Candidates should have completed a MBO or higher degree in a life science discipline, or the equivalent. Experience as lab technician or lab manager and FELASA or Dutch WoD article 6/9/12/13 certification are a strong plus.

The job has growth potential in that a larger facility will be built in the coming years, and the lab supervisor role will grow with it. Growth into either a full-time facility management or research technician role will depend on scientific and institutional developments in the coming years, but long-term planning for this is explicitly encouraged and will be facilitated.
