Postdoc - Road User Motion Prediction for Self-Driving Vehicles

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)

Delft, Netherlands
Posted on Friday, September 1, 2023

Job description

The Intelligent Vehicles (IV) group at TU Delft aims to increase the safety, comfort and sustainability of transportation by means of automated driving. The group conducts problem-driven research within the interdisciplinary spectrum of machine perception, dynamics and control, and human factors. The focus lies on complex (urban) traffic scenarios, on challenging vehicle driving manoeuvres and on the interaction of self-driving vehicles with humans.

The IV group seeks a highly qualified Post-Doctoral Scientist with an interest in performing cutting edge research in the area of interaction modeling and road user motion prediction for self-driving vehicles. Vulnerable Road Users (i.e. pedestrians, cyclists and other riders) are of special interest. This position is part of an ongoing EU project EVENTS (ReliablE in-Vehicle pErception and decisioN-making in complex environmenTal conditionS) involving several partners from the automotive industry and from research institutions across Europe.

The Department

The Department of Cognitive Robotics has the mission of bringing robotic solutions into human-inhabited environments. We combine fundamental research with work with physical demonstrators in areas such as self-driving vehicles, collaborative industrial robots, mobile manipulators, and haptic interfaces. Strong collaborations exist within cross-faculty institutes (TU Delft Robotics Institute and TU Delft Transport Institute), our national robotic ecosystem (RoboValley, Holland Robotics), international industry, and academia.

Requirements

Applicants should have (or soon expect) a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics). They should have a strong academic record with a solid background in machine perception, machine learning and AI. Good programming skills are expected, preferably in Python and/or C++. Knowledge of deep-learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras) and OpenCV/ROS/CUDA is a plus. A certain affinity towards turning complex concepts into real-world practice (i.e. vehicle prototype) is desired. Applicants are expected to be able to act independently as well as to collaborate effectively with members of a larger team (e.g. supervision of M.S. and Ph.D. students).

Good English skills are required.

Conditions of employment

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication: € 4.036 - € 5.090  per month gross). The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service. This service provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service offers a Dual Career Programme for partners and they organise events to expand your (social) network.

Living conditions in the Netherlands (e.g. Delft, Hague, Amsterdam) are considered to be among the very best in Europe. The TU Delft scores consistently high in international comparisons (e.g. within top 15 in QS World Univ. Rankings 2023 in Engineering & Technology).

This postdoc position has a fixed-term contract of 24 months.

Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

From chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the 3mE faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.

3mE is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It’s a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in 3mE’s outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well-being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
