Description
LEO-PNT System Engineer in the LEO-PNT Project Office, Future Navigation Department, Directorate of Navigation.
The LEO-PNT project, a component of the FutureNAV programme, includes the implementation of an overall end-to-end in-orbit service demonstrator for positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) in low Earth orbit (LEO), including system engineering, satellites and launch services, ground segment and operations, system validation, experimentation and services demonstration. The LEO-PNT project is also responsible for the definition of future phases in preparation of a LEO-PNT constellation aiming to provide PNT resilience and robustness, enhancement and assurance of current European GNSS services and novel approaches to PNT, including indoor and 6G NTN PNT for Internet of Things or personal emergencies.
Duties
Reporting to the LEO-PNT System Manager, your tasks and responsibilities will include:
- supporting the monitoring of the LEO-PNT industrial activities for the correct implementation of the system engineering activities within the LEO-PNT project, leading in the areas of system concept of operations and system integration and verification;
- deriving, consolidating and maintaining the constellation mission analysis, concept of operations and system integration and verification applicable to the LEO-PNT project;
- implementing the overall system engineering activities relating to the LEO-PNT project, with particular emphasis on system engineering tools, such as system simulators, model-based system engineering and modern processes and tools, including Agile/SAFE;
- contributing to regular LEO-PNT system engineering activities, including:
- engineering boards;
- regular coordination activities with LEO-PNT teams in areas such as platform, payload, ground segment and operations and mission and experimentation;
- status reporting, conclusions, recommendations and lessons learned for LEO-PNT;
- ensuring the coherence and consistency of the LEO-PNT constellation mission analysis, concept of operations and SIV activities, in coordination with other teams in the Directorate of Navigation, in preparation of the subsequent operational phases, either with institutional or commercial entities;
- contributing to LEO-PNT system engineering activities, including system architecture, system performance, technical requirements, internal and external interfaces and system security;
- supporting the LEO-PNT project in preparation of subsequent LEO-PNT phases in your areas of responsibility;
- supporting the LEO-PNT project procurement of future LEO-PNT industrial activities.
In the execution of your duties, you will work in close collaboration with a team of specialists from the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality and the Directorate of Operations.

Education
A master’s degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline is required for this post.
Additional requirements
- A strong result orientation with the ability to set priorities and present practical solutions both orally and in writing;
- Demonstrated planning and organisational skills.
Experience in LEO-PNT systems and/or GNSS systems is considered an asset.
Strong communication skills and relationship management skills in an international context, i.e. outside your home country, are an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
Applicants must be eligible to access technology and hardware which is subject to European and US export control regulations and for security clearance by their national security administrations.
During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests. Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency's security procedures.
