This is the role
This position is based in the Company’s corporate office in Rotterdam and is an integral member of the global tax department that is made up of approximately 100 tax professionals in 10 countries. More specifically, this position is part of the Tax Planning and Counsel team at LyondellBasell which is a collection of 20+ individuals located in different countries working diligently to comply with our Company’s tax policy requirements and to enhance shareholder value. This Team is responsible for tax restructurings, M&A and internal tax advisory to businesses. In order to achieve our goals, we work closely together with other tax functions, the business and other corporate functions such as Treasury, Legal, Accounting and HR.
This role reports into the Director – Global Country Tax Planning & Mgmt. also located in Rotterdam. The purpose of the role is to optimize the tax aspects of both day-to-day business and extraordinary transactions with emphasis on Dutch and certain European jurisdictions (Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Malta, Luxembourg, Sweden and Slovakia) whereby working collaboratively with other stakeholders within the company and managing relationships with local tax authorities and tax advisors. It includes ensuring that income tax reporting and compliance requirements are met timely and accurately, embedding standardized processes and controls within the organization for the countries in scope of this role.
Roles & Responsibilities
The candidate will be comfortable working on their own initiative to achieve objectives and deadlines relevant to the role requirements and business needs in a timely and accurate manner. The candidate must have strong experience in Dutch tax and cross-border matters exposure to or experience with CIT audit processes and interactions with DTA with a solid working knowledge of tax reporting and compliance processes. Furthermore:
- Lead and coordinate advice for direct tax matters requested by local business operations and NL HQ type functions coordinating day to day matters with appropriate communication on opportunities to management for informed decision making;
- Pro-actively engage with key stakeholders in the footprint to identify local tax opportunities and mitigate potential tax risks, apprising them of potential impacts to LYB;
- Identify, analyze, recommend and implement potential local tax planning ideas including local financing, repatriation and restructuring transactions with consideration of transfer pricing matters;
- Pro-actively monitor and maintain benefits of incentive related tax regimes communicating any revisions to the rules, tax benefits or accounting impacting cash and financial results and pursue local opportunities for tax incentive advocacy;
- Lead and/or support M&A transactions with cross-functional LYB teams and external advisors;
- Lead ongoing audits and controversy for the footprint including collaborating with internal and external stakeholders including assisting in developing dispute resolutions and litigation strategies;
- Monitor tax law changes and new case law for the footprint, evaluating impact and defining recommendation and strategy for the company;
- Implement new tax requirements and policies based on enacted tax laws and/or internal controls;
- Lead and coordinate timely and accurate filing of corporate income tax returns and other tax forms for accuracy of material tax positions reported;
- Support (non-NL jurisdictions in footprint) indirect tax position relative to legislative changes or local tax audits, coordinating communications with local tax authorities as necessary;
- Act as point of contact for the Dutch Tax Authorities including liaising with colleagues in Indirect and Wage tax functions to provide a compliant and cooperative view of LYB as a large taxpayer in the Netherlands;
- Oversee transfer pricing policies and local transfer pricing filings for the footprint;
- Lead Mandatory Disclosure Reporting for LYB by overseeing reporting obligations and train and create awareness internally to safeguard LYB’s position and mitigate risk of inaccurate reporting;
- Lead and coordinate tax provision and reporting process for the footprint ensuring proper tax treatment of key positions and transactions, inclusive of related documentation assessing benefits, risks and mitigating items;
- Train and develop tax professional staff and lead and/or participate in internal training sessions for Tax department;
- Initiate and participate in projects to improve processes in the tax function and notably the footprint. Identify opportunities for continuous process improvement through data analytics and visualization, automation and risk mitigation strategies in particular for the footprint;
- Create tax awareness/ appreciation within the LYB Group and service oriented towards the Group’s Organizations like Treasury, Finance, Legal, Businesses;
- Administrative responsibilities may include being a Power of Attorney signatory for tax matters.

- Excellent knowledge of international income tax principles and the interaction thereof with transfer pricing and tax accounting principles;
- Must be able to perform tax technical research and write tax technical memorandums communicating results to both tax technical and non-tax professionals;
- Fluent in English and Dutch language.

- 8 to 10 years’ work experience ideally within in a large corporate tax environment and/or Big 4 accounting firm;
- Licenses & Certifications
- Tax Degree (Bachelor or Master) required;
